The future of council housing: West Gorton

Tenants transfer to Guinness Northern Counties

Guinness Northern Counties Housing Association are the new not-for-profit landlord for former council tenants in West Gorton after a transfer from the council on 27 September 2010.

If you live in one of these 144 homes you can now look forward to big home improvements such as new kitchens, bathrooms and windows, and a better environment. Work started within days of the transfer.

The transfer follows a resounding tenants' vote in favour of the switch earlier in 2010. Over 89% of those voting said yes.

Local involvement

Councillor Paul Andrews, the Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services has stressed the valuable role played by local people in preparing for this exciting change. "I want to say how grateful and impressed I am at the local community's involvement in this housing transfer," he says.

"The residents' volunteer steering group have given hours of time and bags of energy to get this transfer proposal into shape. Their commitment really shows in the quality of the home improvements every tenant will enjoy, and in the top-notch housing service they've developed with Guinness Northern Counties.

"The steering group really have got the very best deal that could be had for their community. Every one of their neighbours will benefit from that, and the Council is very grateful for their efforts".
