How to pay your Council Tax
Where it is possible you can pay your Council Tax bill by 10 monthly instalments or 12 monthly instalments if you pay by Direct Debit.
You can choose to pay on the 7th, 15th, 21st or 28th of the month.
You can also pay it in two half yearly amounts or all at once, whichever way you choose you must get in touch with us so that we can change our records.
Ways to pay your Council Tax:
- Online
Use our online payment service to pay Council Tax, you will need to have your debit or credit card and your Council Tax account reference number to hand, you can find the number on your bill. - Direct Debit
This is a simple, safe and speedy way to pay. You have a money back guarantee from your bank in the event of an error, advance notice if the date or amount changes and the right to cancel at any time, you only sign one form and your bank does the rest. To pay by direct debit download a Direct Debit form, print it off, fill it in and send it back to us, or phone 0161 907 9400 and ask to set up a direct debit over the phone.
Return your completed form to the Council Tax Service, PO Box 147, Manchester, M15 5TU or fax it on 0161 953 8226. - If you need to change your Direct Debit details you can contact the Council Tax service on 0161 907 9400 or if you prefer, you can download a Direct Debit form fill in the new details and send it to the address on the form. You should give a daytime phone number in case we need to contact you. It also helps if you write on the form that it's a change to a current direct debit.
- Telephone
You can pay over the phone using your debit or credit card. Phone 0161 273 5270. Lines are open 24 hours a day - seven days a week. You will need to have your debit or credit card to hand and your Council Tax account reference number. - Payment Card
At a Post Office - you can use a payment card to pay by cash or cheque free of charge at most post offices. To order a payment card, phone 0161 907 9400 or e-mail ctax.enquiries@manchester.gov.uk please write, 'Payment card order' in the subject field of your e-mail.
At a PayPoint or Payzone outlet - for cash payments only. All you need do is hand the retailer your payment card and money, and they will do the rest for you. You will be given a receipt, please keep it in a safe place.
You cannot use your Council Tax payment card at a bank or building society.
- Post
Make cheques payable to Manchester City Council. Write your name, address and account reference number on the back of your cheque. We do not accept post-dated cheques. We do not send receipts for cheques payments. Send your cheques to:

It can take several days to process cheques so allow plenty of time for your payment to be credited to your Council Tax account.
- In Person
At the Cashier Counter which is located just off the St Peter's Square corridor on the ground floor of the Town Hall Extension and is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4.30pm.
