How your council tax is calculated
Council Tax is worked out on a daily basis. If you move home, you will be billed up to the date of the move at your old home and from the date of the move at your new home.
Example
Council Tax for a Band B property from 1 April 2008 to 31 March 2009 is £989.08.
If you moved to a new property of the same band on 16 May 2008, your Council Tax bill for the old property will be £112.68 and £876.40 for your new property.
It is worked out as follows:
45 days from 1 April 2008 to 15 May 2008
£989.08 (yearly Council Tax amount) ÷ 365 (days in the year) X 45 (days lived in the property) = £112.68 (amount due).
Plus
320 days from 16 May 2008 to 31 March 2009
£989.08 (yearly Council Tax amount) ÷ 365 (days in the year) X 320 (remaining days of the year) = £876.40 (amount due).
Total amount payable = £989.08
