How your Council Tax is calculated
Council Tax is worked out on a daily basis. If you move home, you will be billed up to the date of the move at your old home by your old council and by Manchester from the date you moved into your new home.

Example
If you moved to a new property in Manchester on 16 May 2011, your old council will bill you for your old property for the 45 days between 1 April 2011 and 15 May 2011 and Manchester will charge you for 321 days, from 16 May 2011 to 31 March 2012 (2012 is a leap year so has 366 days).

Council Tax for a Band B property in Manchester from 1 April 2011 to 31 March 2012 is £1032.11.

The charge for 321 days from 16 May 2011 to 31 March 2012 is worked out as follows:
£1032.11 (yearly Council Tax amount) รท 366 (days in the year) x 321 (remaining days of the year) = £905.21 (amount due).

Remember
Tell your old council you have moved so they can bill you for the 45 days from 1 April 2011 and 15 May 2011.
