Headstone

Various regulations apply to the types and sizes of memorials which can be erected in Manchester Cemeteries. Hard stone, marble and granite are the only materials permitted. Working with these materials is a skilled job, and as there are regulations governing the method of construction and the size of memorial permitted in a cemetery, you will need to consult a monumental mason who will be able to explain these to you in details. A memorial may include a holder for cut flowers, but full length planting and kerbs are not permitted as they prevent us from maintaining the cemeteries to the high standard we require.

As the only local authority to employ its own stonemason, Bereavement Services is ideally placed to advise on the choice of memorial, its size and the method of construction. We are able to offer a range of memorials to suit individual requirements, from a simple marker to a more elaborate memorial.

To help you make the right choice of memorial to suit your individual needs, we have provided the following frequently asked questions:

I would like to purchase a memorial. How can I find out what is available and where they can be located?

You can find information on the range of memorial options available at our cemeteries from our downloadable Memorials Brochure (see below). Our Customer Services staff at Blackley or Southern Cemetery are also available to provide information and guidance on the selection and locating of memorials.

Can I place my own memorial?

No. However, Manchester City Council has a range of memorials that are permitted in our cemeteries. These can be found in our Memorials Brochure which can be downloaded below.

Can I put a memorial on a public grave?

Public Graves are owned by the Council. Therefore, no individual family has claim to the grave. However, please note that all families of those interred in public graves can apply for a public stone with the name of the deceased and date of death inscribed.

What happens when the lease on my memorial has expired?

The Customer Services team will be able to advise you about renewing the lease on your memorial.

If you have a specific memorial requirement, or require advice on making your choice, contact us on 0161 227 3201 (Blackley) or 0161 227 3205 (Southern) and we will be happy to discuss it with you. To help you select a memorial to suit your needs, a range of memorial options are available in our Memorials Brochure.

I would like to take a photograph of my relative's headstone. Can I do this?

Currently it is only permissible to take a photograph or video footage of a headstone with the written consent of the grave owner.
