Councillor Sue Murphy: Questions for the municipal year 2013/2014
Tim Hartley, who lives in Manchester, asked:
Why haven't the Christmas lights been put up in Withington centre on the lamp posts as previous years? The children are most disappointed.
Councillor Sue Murphy, Deputy Leader, replied:
Thank you for your question.
As you have suggested the City Council usually provides a Christmas Tree and festive lights throughout Withington Village. I know this is a popular measure and local councillors have always funded it through CASH grants (a local budget which is allocated to small projects which make neighbourhoods more attractive).
Unfortunately this year the City Council has to deliver a series of major spending reductions which have affected most communities in one way or another. The local councillors for Withington felt that it was important to support residents who have campaigned to keep Withington Baths open whilst the new indoor leisure centre is being built. This has meant that this year we have a Christmas tree, but have reserved funding to support Withington Baths.
While it is always difficult to balance the many competing demands on council budgets, I hope in this case we have got the balance right - Withington has a tree this Christmas and the baths remain open for residents to enjoy.
Thank you for raising this issue with me.
