International Women’s Day 2010
Manchester City Council is keen to fund local groups to host International Women's Day Celebrations in March 2010.
International Women's Day was first celebrated 19 March 1911 in Germany, Austria, Denmark and other European countries. International Women's Day has gone from strength to strength with events being held to mark the day all over the world. The day is an opportunity to celebrate women's achievements and continued aspirations for equality in all aspects of life all over the globe.
Theme 2010 - Women in Action
This year's theme is Women in Action. We want to support projects that celebrate women and support women to take an active role in society whether in sport, politics, the arts, history, business or community and voluntary work. We are also keen to support projects that encourage women, including young women to be active citizens.
Manchester City Council are keen to promote projects that:
- Are innovative and engage a diverse range of women
- Involve different groups working in partnership
- Link into the theme
- Involve young women
Women In Action Diary of Events:
International Women's Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on Monday 8 March 2010. Every year thousands of events occur throughout the month of March to mark the many achievements of women.
Manchester City Council is celebrating this year's International Women's Day on Sunday 7 March 2010 from 1pm - 4pm in the Town Hall (Albert Square).
The theme of this year's event in Manchester is; 'Women of Action' - a celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women throughout history. On the day there will be a number of free exciting activities including interactive arts and crafts sessions, inspirational women speakers, information stalls, entertainment and much more.
This year we are also celebrating the 25th anniversary of International Women's Day events in Manchester. In honour of this, a 25th anniversary exhibition will be held, with an interactive space for people to share stories and memorabilia of past celebrations.
Manchester City Council also marks the annual celebration with an exciting variety of local events and activities across the city throughout the month of March. Full details of these and all other information relating to International Women's Day is available through our Diary of Events.
