Women and Business

Winner - Christine Humphreys (The alcohol free shop)

The shop is based in the city centre of Manchester, Christine set up the shop 3 years ago to help make alcohol free alternatives more readily available to people who need to reduce their intake or abstain from alcohol to improve their chances of better health. The shop promotes alcohol awareness and alcohol free products. The shop employs local people.

Women and Health

Winner - Adela Mugabo (George House Trust Positive Speaker)

Adela is a positive speaker volunteer for GHT and goes all over the city talking to people about HIV.  Adela works tirelessly to challenge stigma and discrimination against HIV positive people.   She also volunteers for the Black Health Agency and others and founded Poz Fem a national organisation supporting HIV positive women.

Women and Culture

Winner - The LIS Team (Feminist play performed in prisons)

The LIS team are based at University of Manchester Students Union .  LIS is a modern day adaptation of Aristophanes Lysistrata - A play about women's rights and gender roles. The 2000-year-old play adaptation is set in a Manchester borough and instead of opposing civil war it opposes gang violence. It aims to make feminism relevant to women today; they have performed in local prisons and drug and alcohol services.

Women and the Environment

Winner - Manchester Women's Design Group

MWDS is made up of volunteers from Manchester with a commitment to ensuring that the built environment is created with women's needs at the heart.  They believe that the diverse communities of women that live in towns and cities should enjoy a quality environment that is well designed, accessible, environmentally sustainable, affordable and safe.  The group recently created a gender checklist, a best practice guide that planners can use to ensure they meet women's needs when planning in the city.  The group offer consultancy, training, information, support, advice and research on issues related to women and the design of urban environments.

Valuing Older People

Winners - Amina Latimer and Rebecca Asgill

Amina Latimer

Amina Latimer is from Hulme and is a well-known volunteer in the city, since retiring she has volunteered for many organisations for many years.  Some of the events she has volunteered at are International Women's day, Commonwealth Games, Children' play schemes, Manchester City Art Gallery, Manchester Para Olympics at Sport City, Refugee theatre Company at the Royal Exchange to name a few.  Amina is also keen to undertake any training that might help make her be a better volunteer.  Amina actively looks for volunteering opportunities that will bring her into contact with a wide variety of people.

Rebecca Asgill

Rebecca is from Moss Side and has dedicated her time (over the past 11 years), working in the community and at the Windrush centre (Moss Side), helping younger and older women of all nationalities to improve their lives and their language skills.  She has worked tirelessly with older people on adult literacy classes and on programmes with refugees and asylum seekers on ESOL courses.  She is always willing to volunteer her time to teach older people in the community and many of the people she has taught have gone on to further studies or employment.  Rebecca also offers people advice and support to help with personal problems.

Outstanding Young Woman

Winner - Charlotte Hughes

Charlotte is from Hulme, she was 20 when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer.  She has been actively campaigning http://www.charlottesshiningstar.org.uk/ and lobbying to change the law so young women can have smear tests earlier to detect cancer sooner and save lives.  Charlotte has been caring for her daughter on her own since the father died, all whilst battling her own illness and campaigning so other young women don't lose their lives.

Kath Locke Award

Winner - Ruth Ibegbuna

Ruth developed the Reclaim girls project at the Urbis to work with young women in Moss Side to encourage them to have self-esteem, ambition and pride in their community. RECLAIMS mission is to work with vulnerable young people in areas associated with crime, unemployment or social instability. RECLAIM acts as a tool to inspire, provoke leadership and challenge negative behaviour and to offer positive life choices to young people.
