Baytree Renewal Area: children's playground

The City Council has won a prestigious national award for the way we involved local people in the successful regeneration of a run-down part of north Manchester.

The Chartered Institute of Housing gave us their 2007 UK Housing Award for 'empowering and involving communities' after seeing how we'd teamed-up with local people to breathe new life into homes and the environment of the Baytree area in Harpurhey.

Derelict

Back in 2000 many local people had abandoned their homes, lots of properties were derelict and house prices had crashed. After in-depth consultation, and with overwhelming support from the local community, we declared Baytree a 'renewal area' - opening up investment from the multi-million pound Housing Market Renewal scheme.

Vibrant

By summer 2007 things had changed beyond recognition. Baytree residents played a key part in creating an attractive, desirable area and forging a closer community. Baytree is now vibrant, house prices are rising and residents say it's become a great place to live.
