Barrack Street Park

About Barrack Street Park

Barrack Park, formerly known as St. Georges Park, is situated on the central western city boundary with Trafford and surrounded on all sides by City Council housing stock.

The site previously contained the barracks and home to a battalion of the 15th King's Hussars, a unit that later gained prominence for its enforcement role played within the Peterloo massacre of 1819. By the turn of the 20th century the St.George's area had descended into heavy squalor and disrepute, and a decision was taken to redevelop it as a park for public use.

In 1994 Barrack Park underwent a programme of extensive refurbishment that included upgrading all pathways, drainage to the football pitch and the installation of new play provision. The name of the park was changed from St. George's to Barrack Park, as this was the name by which the park is locally known, and which has strengthened the site's identity within the local community.

Barrack Park is divided into two large separate fields, one of which accommodates a football pitch and trees, and the other accommodates a children's playground, lawns, trees and a wildflower garden. Changing facilities, a multi-sports court, a raised promenade and an unmarked five a side football pitch complete with posts sited next to the children's play area are offered.

Families with small children, dog walkers, an adult football team who have regular bookings and teenagers predominantly use the site for informal sports and recreation.
