Beech Road Park
About Beech Road Park
Beech Road Park, once known as Chorlton Recreational Ground, sits in the leafy suburb of Chorlton. The park was originally sited south of Beech Road until 16th May 1896, when Lord Egerton gave the present site to the Council in 1904 upon selling the original recreational ground for the development of housing. It was only on Valentine's Day in 1968 that the park acquired its first beech trees, 50 of which were planted by the then Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress with local school children.
Recreational facilities offered are a large dog free zone, play equipment for younger children, a multi sports wall and two picnic tables adapted for use by disabled people. All entrances are wide enough for wheelchair access. The site landscape comprises of amenity grassland with mature trees planted in formal rows both within the park and around its boundaries.
The site aims to provide a focal point for the local community, and is mainly used by local traders, dog walkers, teenagers and families for relaxation and informal sports. The Beech Road Traders Association actively works with Manchester's Leisure Services staff to improve and promote the site. The park plays host to the annual Beech Road Festival and also Manchester's celebrated annual Unity festival, both of which each attract up to 10,000 people.
