St. John's Gardens

About St. John's Gardens

Green Flag Award

This small city centre park is located on Lower Bryom Street near the Museum of Science and Industry and the Air and Space Museum.

In 2010, St. John's Gardens was awarded a Green Flag Award for achieving the national standard for parks and green spaces.

City workers, tourists and city centre residents predominantly use this green and pleasant space as a relaxation garden. Informal tai chi sessions are frequently practiced early in the morning, and the site is highly popular with city workers in the summer months.

The gardens consist of amenity grassland laid out in formal lawns, flower and herbaceous bedding areas with ornamental planting, access routes, seating and an amenity hut.

A monument to the church and the 22,000 people buried in its grounds stands in the middle of the Gardens where the original entrance of St. John's Church lay. A panel within the monument stands in memory of William Marsden who presided over the committee which obtained the Saturday Holiday for Manchester in 1843.
