Clayton Park

About Clayton Park

This historic site is home to Clayton Hall, a grade two star Listed building surrounded by rose gardens and accessed by a Listed bridge over a drained moat. Mature trees and blocks of woodland surround Clayton Hall, which lies in the centre of the park.

The Hall dates back to the 12th century, and the park is situated on what remains of the vast estate of the De Clayton family. It is reputed that the Royalist army were stationed at Clayton Hall before its attack on Manchester and Oliver Cromwell is said to have stayed there. Clayton Hall is said to boast three ghosts.

Clayton park is sited within the East Manchester regeneration area, and is primarily used for dog walking, under 12s recreational play, and by the active Clayton Park Bowling Club who are presently forming a junior bowling league.

The park offers the visitor a quiet haven away from the bustle of urban life as well as providing leisure facilities. The Friends of Clayton Park are working in partnership with Manchester Leisure to improve and promote the site.
