Openshaw Park
About Openshaw Park
Formerly known as George Street Recreational Ground, this once run-down site in the Bradford Ward has recently been redeveloped by New Deal for Communities and renamed Openshaw Park. In 2010, the park was awarded a Green Flag Award, the national benchmark of excellence for parks.
Located in a deprived area of East Manchester, Openshaw Park has a formal design with lawns and areas of amenity grass divided by paths, mature trees and bedding areas. A woodland and wildflower area, herbaceous bedding area and sensory rockery were created in the park in 2003.
During the football season a pitch is marked out for the Sunday Junior Football League.
The park is mainly used for dog walking, children's recreational play, sports days, community events and educational activities.
The Friends of Openshaw Park formed in 2002 to facilitate local community participation in the continued redevelopment of the park.
