Marie Louise Gardens

About Marie Louise Gardens

Marie Louise Gardens is a 3.4 hectare oasis of peace and tranquillity in one of Manchester 's most densely populated suburbs. The gardens are situated to the south east of Palatine Road which runs between West Didsbury and Northenden, and adjacent to both the Blackburn Park and Albert Park conservation areas.

Tucked away behind a busy main road, Marie Louise Gardens are often described as a hidden gem, because so many residents are unaware of their existence until they stumble across them. The site was given to the citizens of Manchester in 1903 by Josephine Silkenstädt, in memory of her daughter, Marie Louise, who died young in 1891, aged 26.

The park has over 250 mature trees, including some rare ones, which together with the many shrubs and lawned areas, create a unique atmosphere of quiet seclusion. It is home to a wide variety of activities ranging from a morning stroll with the dog to Tai Chi or a picnic, and provides a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Friends Group

The Friends of Marie Louise Gardens are working in partnership with Manchester City Council on a restoration plan for the Gardens, and are striving to achieve a Green Flag Award, the benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas. The Friends also organise a number of events during the year in Marie Louise Gardens including a plant swap, bulb planting for schools, a nature trail and Christmas crafts.
