Sports, leisure & culture Alexandra Park Regeneration Project

The project

Heritage Lottery Fund

The project

In December 2011 we were awarded £2.2million from the HLF, this has been match funded by the council to bring major physical improvements to the Park alongside a programme of community activities

When Alexandra Park opened to the public in 1870 it was innovative in its use of oval shaped and curved pathways and the introduction of sporting activity into an ornamental park. The funding will see physical improvements relating to the Park's original design, including footpaths, buildings, planting schemes, tennis courts, sports pitches and changing facilities.

In the week beginning 10 December 2012, enabling work will start in the park which includes:

  • Opening up the historic buildings to check the condition of them and carry out a paint analysis
  • A survey of the culvert which runs through the park under the southern oval (near the pavilion)
  • Tree felling/canopy lifting

Major work on site is planned to start early in 2013.
