Road markings and signs

Road markings

Traffic lights cycle way

We have a responsibility for installing road markings to regulate traffic. The road markings used on the public highway are subject to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Yellow lines (including double yellow lines)

Yellow lines are provided where there is a need to restrict parking or loading to help prevent obstructive and dangerous parking and to assist traffic flow.

Parking and loading bays

Parking and loading bays are designated areas, marked with white lines, where vehicles can park, wait and load.

Bus lanes and cycle lanes

Bus lanes are there to allow public transport access around the city. Cycle lanes help provide space on the road for cyclists by separating them from other traffic.

What you can do

If you see a missing and/or faded road marking report this to us, you will need the following information:

  • the location of the problem; and
  • description of the marking.

What we can do

An officer will access and decide what action is required, if the work is deemed necessary it will be entered into a programme of works. If a decision is made that no repair is required, an officer will advise you.

What don't we do

We are not responsible for road markings on private streets or unadopted roads or lines on private car parks (i.e. supermarkets, multi-storey) please contact the land owner.
