Reduce Reuse Recycle
What can you do
Space in landfill sites is rapidly running out and the cost of sending waste to landfill is rising. Recycling allows materials to be used again and again it reduces the need to take raw materials out of the earth. This saves energy, is good news for the environment and helps us to reduce our carbon footprint.
The simple message to remember is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Reducing food waste is a major issue. We throw away 7.2 million tonnes of food from our homes every year in the UK
It's not just about good food going to waste either; wasting food costs the average family with children around £680 a year, or £50 a month, and has serious environmental implications too. If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 5 cars off the road.
Reduce the amount of waste you create.
- use a lunch box for your packed lunch instead of cling film, a plastic bag or tinfoil;
- cut down on how much food waste you and your family produce;
- lovefoodhatewaste provides ideas and recipes.
Reuse items before you throw away or recycle.
- reuse you carrier bags, jars and pots;
- donate unwanted clothes or household goods to a local charity. Contact the Association of Charity Shops to find your local shop;
- have a car boot sale.
Recycle items you can't reuse
- Recycle your waste correctly;
- use your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC);
- Request your bulky items of waste to be collected.
