There are various stages within the application process to become a new hackney carriage or private hire driver in Manchester, this area breaks down the process into stages.

You are reminded that it is an offence to work as a hackney carriage or hackney carriage driver unless you are in possession of a valid licence. 

How long does an application take?  

It is difficult to state how long an application will take as there are many factors:   

  • DBS – can take up to 12 weeks to process, a DBS certificate is sent to the applicant.  The applicant should sign immediately  into the DBS annual checking service and then sending the original certificate into the licensing unit.  
  • Convictions Disclosure – Where an applicant has a relevant conviction(s) the matter will be referred to a Sub-Committee or Senior Officer Licensing Panel for approval.  
  • Skills assessment, coaching session and knowledge test - applicants may take more than three attempts before passing the driver knowledge test.
