Driver licence renewals
Driver Licence Renewals that have already been submitted and paid for:
- We will process your application and renew your licence as normal
- If we need to see your documents, we will ask you to come to an appointment at the Town Hall Extension.
- We're aware that it's hard to get a medical at the moment so we will accept a medical from a doctor who is not your GP, provided they have access to your medical history.
It's extremely important that you adhere to your licence conditions and declare any change in your medical situation - immediately - to the Licensing Unit for further
advice.
If you can't get a medical from your own GP you can get a summary of your medical records from your GP, and then arrange the appointment with another GP (who is undertaking Group II medicals) and show them your medical summary. It is no longer a requirement that the doctor conducting your medical has access to your full medical records; a summary is OK.

Why we are not just extending licences at this time
Some local authorities have taken this option, but we want to minimise any risk to public safety as far as we can, as is our primary function. We don't want hundreds of vehicles and drivers with expired badges and plates: the confusion, potential risks and increased admin / costs down the line would be unworkable. Shifting hundreds of vehicle licence renewal dates to a later date in the year, with concurrent testing requirements, would lead to spikes in activity and testing demand that couldn't be managed.
We will, however, keep reviewing this approach and engaging with trade members and reps.
