Women's Day: aspirations and inspirations

International Women's Day has been celebrated around the world since 1911. It's a day to celebrate and recognise women's progress in the struggle for equal rights, justice and peace.

Manchester City Council has a tradition of celebrating the event by supporting a variety of events across the city during March. This year's theme is the inspirations and aspirations of Manchester women. Events across the city will celebrate the day with lots of activities to get involved in.

The month of events will be launched on International Women's Day, Sunday 8 March 2009, from 1 till 5pm in the Town Hall. On the day there will be a number of free activities, including interactive arts and crafts sessions, information stalls, discussions about women's health, education and employment, and much more.

Look out for the Diary of Events, which will give details of local activities taking place in your area, and further details of the event at the Town Hall. For more information visit our website www.manchester.gov.uk and search for International Women's Day, or call Alex Keelan on 234 4263; textphone 234 3971.

Alexandra Keelan, the Council's gender officer, said: "Manchester is full of inspirational women - not only prominent and prodigiously talented figures, but also those who work tirelessly behind the scenes for the benefit of their friends, families and wider communities.

"As well as highlighting women's achievements, this event will hopefully also prompt other women in Manchester to think about their own personal aspirations and offer support and encouragement for them to realise them.

"There will be lots going on, both on the day itself and throughout the month, and it's something the Council is proud to support."
