Manchester People - Issue 37, New Year 2009
Looking after someone? We're looking out for you
Are you providing unpaid care to look after a member of your family, a friend or neighbour who is disabled, frail or unwell? It may be something you just do, as a son, daughter, mother, partner, friend or similar. But you are making a huge contribution to the quality of life of the person you help.
Tens of thousands of people in Manchester look after other adults or children in this way, but don't get any formal recognition or support for doing it.
Don't miss out!
You may be entitled to extra allowances, benefits or discounts - Carers UK has estimated that about £660million goes unclaimed in carers' allowances each year.
- You can get support to take a break from your caring role.
- Find out about information, advice, activities, support services, groups and opportunities especially for you.
- Caring may have increased over time, or started suddenly after a change. You may be older, or a younger person - anyone can find out more.
- Caring can take its toll on your own health too. Find out about help to try to prevent this.
- You may be disabled yourself and also looking after someone.
- You may be juggling work and looking after someone.
