Adaptations to your home

Adapting your home to live independently

Sign Video

If we can't cover all your needs by providing daily living equipment, there are a couple of options.

The first is to consider moving house to a property which has all the adaptations you need to live independently.

If moving isn't an option, we may be able to fit adaptations to your current home - although it depends on your circumstances, and the type of property you live in.

We'll send a technical expert to check whether the work can be done, and to look at detailed plans.

Minor adaptations, like stair-rails or grab-rails, might be done quite quickly, but it takes longer to arrange bigger jobs like a stairlift or a new bath. See the list of adaptations below.

If you live in a Manchester Council home the adaptations are free.

If you are a Manchester Council tenant living on an 'overspill' estate outside Manchester you should contact the council where you live first.

If you live in Manchester, but not in a council home, you can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant to pay for some, or all of the work. How much you get depends on your circumstances. If you're on a low income the grant may cover all the work, so you would pay nothing at all.
