Cremation

Cremation was illegal in England until 1885. The registers of Manchester Crematorium (opened 1892), Barlow Moor Road, were lost in the blitz of Christmas 1940, the first war-time Christmas of the Second World War.

Details of some 35 per cent of the 16,000 cremations up to that time have been recovered from the memorials at the crematorium and published by the Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society. The index is free to search and members can access the full memorials.

The records of Blackley Crematorium (opened 1959) are available at Manchester burial records, however indexing is not yet complete.
