Libraries Grave or cemetery burial records

Church burial grounds

A graveyard mostly refers to a burial ground next to a church. Our church register lists church burial records. Most of our Church of England graveyard records are also available on Ancestry.

An index of burials at Manchester Cathedral 1573 to 1868 is available on findmypast. This contains details of all burials recorded in the burial registers of Manchester Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George, arranged in order of:

  • surname
  • forename
  • date of burial and
  • contains all of the information contained in the original register entries.

It also acts as an index to the sextons' books (the records kept by people who managed the cemetery), which can be accessed on microfilm at Central Library.

Findmypast and Ancestry can be accessed for free at any of our libraries.

National records

The national burial index is an index to over 13 million burials taken mainly from church registers. It is also now available on findmypast. However coverage for Lancashire is limited.
