F1 ace Button wins hearts in Manchester
Manchester was all revved up as race ace Jenson Button drove through the city centre streets.
Up to 60,000 Formula One fans gathered to watch the British former world champion drive as part of the Vodafone VIP Live event on Bank Holiday Monday, 29 August.
He reached speeds of more than 100mph down Deansgate before thrilling the crowds with 'doughnut' spins by the side of Albert Square.
Button's McLaren F1 car was emblazoned with an I Love MCR logo in a show of support for the campaign and Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, presented him with a campaign t-shirt.
Cllr Amesbury said: "This was an event which will live long in the memory and I was delighted to hear Jenson Button tell the crowds that he loves Manchester because Manchester certainly loved him.
"The cheers were almost as deafening as the roar of the F1 engine and there was a palpable sense of excitement among the tens of thousands who had lined the streets to watch."
