By-elections

A UK Parliamentary by-election occurs when a seat becomes vacant during the lifetime of a Parliament.

This could be due to:-

  • resignation of a sitting Member of Parliament (MP)
  • expulsion of the MP
  • elevation of the MP to the Peerage
  • death of the MP
  • bankruptcy
  • lunacy

A by-election does not take place if a Member of Parliament changes his or her political allegiance.
