By-elections
A UK Parliamentary by-election occurs when a seat becomes vacant during the lifetime of a Parliament.
This could be due to:-
- resignation of a sitting Member of Parliament (MP)
- expulsion of the MP
- elevation of the MP to the Peerage
- death of the MP
- bankruptcy
- lunacy
A by-election does not take place if a Member of Parliament changes his or her political allegiance.
