Regulation and inspection

Health and safety is about preventing people from being harmed by work or becoming ill through work. We should not put ourselves, other workers or the public in danger.

Health and safety law applies to all businesses however small.  It covers employees, full or part-time, temporary or permanent, the self-employed, young people doing work experience, apprentices, charity workers, mobile workers and homeworkers.

Health and safety enforcement is split between local authorities and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).   The HSE provide advice leaflets and up to date advice for businesses.

What we can do

We deal with health and safety in offices, shops, warehouses, restaurants, pubs and clubs, leisure premises, care homes and private nurseries and consumer services.  We regularly:

  • carry out inspections of businesses and business premises to ensure that safe and healthy working conditions are provided for all employees and visitors;
  • investigate  accidents at work which involve either staff or the general public;
  • investigate complaints relating to health and safety in the workplace;
  • provide information to businesses and members of the public to increase general awareness of health and safety;
  • we respond immediately to fatalities and potential fatal major injuries in the workplace.

 What we don't do

We do not offer health and safety training.
