Noise

Over 1 million employees in Great Britain are exposed to levels of noise that puts their hearing at risk.

Exposure to excessive levels of noise may result in noise induced hearing loss.

What can you do

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005  requires that measures should be taken to keep exposure as low as possible.  If you have to shout to be clearly heard by someone 2 metres away you may need to ask a specialist consultant to take some noise measurements for you and suggest ways to reduce the risk. The regulations also apply to those working in the music and entertainment sector.

Control measures include buying quieter machinery, enclosing noisy equipment and limiting time spent in noisy areas.  If noise levels are still unacceptably high following the introduction of control measures then hearing protection should be made available to staff.

More detailed information can be found within the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.
