Tips & pointers on owning a dog

Our guide to dog ownership includes information from the RSPCA, The Dogs Trust and our own Dog Warden Service and offers advice and tips on all aspects of dog ownership.

The first, and one of the most important, decisions is whether or not to get a dog.  You should ask yourself questions such as:

• do I have the time to look after a dog?
• is my home suitable for a dog? Maybe a small breed would suit your home better than a large one;
• am I able to properly look after and care for a dog?
• are there enough places nearby to exercise a dog? Find your nearest park?
• can I afford a dog, as a dog will need a balanced diet and regular veterinary care?
• does anyone in my family suffer from allergies?
• are there young or small children in the family? Think about whether having a dog is suitable, and - if so - what type of dog would be best.
