Environmental problems Stray dogs

Roaming or secured stray dogs

Any dog that's out on its own is classed as a stray dog. Any dog that's unsupervised in a public place may be taken by us.

During office hours:

We will collect a dog during office hours: Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm. If you find a stray dog during these hours please tell us, using the 'Report a stray dog' form.

A secured stray dog cannot be collected unless there is someone to meet the Dog Warden. You must be over 18 years old to hand the dog over to them.

Outside of office hours:

If you find a dog at other times and are able to, please keep the dog until the next working day and arrange for the dog warden to come and collect.

Alternatively, we have two out of hours drop-off points:

  • Between 6pm to 11pm Monday - Thursday, call 0161 794 8888, arrangements will be made to drop the dog off at: Turnpike House, 631 Eccles New Road, Salford, M50 1SW - please call before attending as this will cut down any waiting time.
  • On Saturday, Sunday and all bank holidays between 9am to 5pm dogs can be taken to our nominated kennels at: Manchester Dogs Home, Moss Brook Road, Harpurhey, M9 5PG

Please note that neither we or Manchester Dogs Home can collect a dog out-of-hours.

When there is no cover, keep the dog until the next day and drop it off at Manchester Dogs Home between 9am and 5pm.
