The Story of Juba Royton (Online Exhibition)
Introduction
Parish registers are useful for researching the history of communities. The Greater Manchester County Record Office (with Manchester Archives) holds the records of the Anglican Diocese of Manchester - these include the registers of over 300 Church of England churches in Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Leigh, Rochdale, Bury, Oldham, Rossendale, Ashton, Stalybridge, and Stretford.
The registers include information on baptisms, marriages and burials. Some parish collections stretch back to the 1500s. We are collecting evidence of early black and minority ethnic presence in the Manchester area. Have you found any reference to black and minority ethnic people in the early (pre-1900) parish registers?
If so then please let us know. Here are some examples that have already been found which show the wealth of information parish registers can give about just one man from Royton in the 1700s.
