Immigration records and passenger lists
R. Kershaw and M. Pearsall, 'Immigrants and Aliens' is a book which gives a general introduction to immigration records. More information about immigration records can be found on The National Archives web site.
UK incoming passenger lists 1878-1960 for ships arriving from foreign ports outside of Europe and the Mediterranean are available on Ancestry.co.uk. Free access to this is available at The Manchester Room@City Library or any Manchester City Council library via Ancestry Library Edition.
There are separate lists for British (and Commonwealth) passengers and Alien passengers. The Moving Here website contains digitized images of inwards passenger lists between March 1948 and October 1960 which brought groups of Indian and Caribbean migrants to the UK - these lists have been indexed by ship and by person and are free to search and download online.
UK outbound passenger lists for 1890-1960 and passport applications 1851-1903 are available on the Findmypast.co.uk. Free access to Findmypast is available at The Manchester Room@City Library.
