Family History in Manchester

Non-Conformist and Catholic

Non-conformist

We hold Baptist, Congregational (now United Reformed), Presbyterian, Unitarian and Jewish records, essentially just for the City of Manchester. We also have Methodist records for chapels in the Manchester and Stockport Methodist District, which includes parts of Bury, Oldham, Salford, Tameside and Trafford Metropolitan Districts. Records of Stockport chapels are at Stockport Library. The majority of these registers are on microfilm at The Manchester Room@City Library, although some are only available by prio appointment at the Greater Manchester County Record Office.

The Greater Manchester County Record Office also has Quaker records for Hardshaw East Monthly Meeting and the former Hardshaw Monthly Meeting. Some registers are on microfiln and are are available at The Manchester Room@City Library.

BMDRegisters is a searchable on-line service of early (pre 1837) non-conformist birth , marriage and death registers held at the National Archives.

Roman Catholic

The official place of deposit for Roman Catholic registers for the Manchester area is Lancashire Record Office, but The Manchester Room@City Library has an incomplete set of microfilm copies for some parishes within the City of Manchester.

The Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society have started to create an index to persons named in the Manchester Roman Catholic registers. This index is available on their web site. In addition the following CD-ROMS produced by them are available to use in The Manchester Room@City Library:

  • Manchester, St Mary (RC), Baptism Registers 1820-1831
  • Collyhurst, St Patrick (RC), Baptism Registers 1832-1860
  • Collyhurst, St Patrick (RC), Burial Registers 1832-1858
