Multi-Cultural Manchester
Introduction
The growth of Manchester from the mid-18th century onwards went hand in hand with the arrival of people of many nationalities and ethnic groups. This is a very brief overview of some of the sources of information on these migrations held by The Manchester Room@City Library and the Greater Manchester County Record Office. The ethnic groups are generally identified by category, for example African-Caribbean or Asian. We encourage you to delve more into our collections and even add to them, if you have any material.
This page of the website is a very brief introduction to some of the sources for the ethnic history of Manchester. We would welcome details of other sources we have missed. We would also be very pleased to hear from anyone who may be able to offer actual source material.
The Story of Juba Royton - an on-line exhibition about an African living in Royton in the 1700s.
