Kosovan and other refugees in the 1990s/00s

Kosovan refugees first arrived in Manchester in May 1999. Some were settled at Barnes Hospital in Cheadle. Reference to this is made in Tony Kusner, Remembering Refugees Then and Now (Unviersity of Manchester, 2006), pp.70-76. Unfortunately we do not have a copy of this book at present.

The report 'Balkan briefing (part 4). Kosovo refugees in the North West region of the United Kingdom' by Iqbal Sram and David Ward was published in Journal of Epidemiol and Community Health (2000;54). We do not have a copy of this, but it is available for free on-line . It briefly describes how the authorities in the North West responded to the refugees.

In addition we hold the following relating to refugees in Manchester in the 1990s-2000s:

  • Manchester refugee population (Manchester City Council, 1995). 15 page report of the results of interviews with Bosnians, Chileans, Iraqis and Sudanese in Manchester in 1994. (q325.21 Ma)
  • Jackie Ould, A long way from home: young refugees in Manchester write about their lives (Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Archive, 2002) (305.23 Lo)
  • Jackie Ould, The distance we have travelled....a teaching resource abour refugees (Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Education Trust, 2007). Concentrates on Somali, Kurdish and Afghani refugees in Manchester.
