Access Arrangements

Research Policy

From 16 July 2011 we will charge £10 to carry out single searches (up to 15 minutes) in response to written enquiries from our customers. Personal callers will always be welcome in the Manchester Room or the Greater Manchester County Record Office, where our staff will be happy to advise about, and provide access to, our collections free of charge. We also offer a more in-depth and detailed research service for those who cannot visit the library, at a charge of £30 per hour. Contact us for more details. We apologise for any incovenience this may cause.

For written enquiries we will:

Answer all enquiries by letter or by e-mail within 10 working days or explain why a reply may take longer.

  • Offer advice on our collections and how to access them for free.
  • Make prints from our microfilms of church registers and Manchester Cathedral registers for a fee of £2.50 when you know the specific church and precise date. *Please note you can search the following on-line yourself:
  • Carry out detailed research using our paid research service at a cost of £30 per hour.
  • Undertake one search (up to 15 minutes) of a specific source for a charge of £10* (excluding newspapers)
  • Alternatively you can visit in person or employ a record agent.
