Picture Book Moss Side
Worksheet 4: Changing communities 2
To explore through text from 'Forever and Ever Amen' and relevant images what it was like to grow up in the West Indies and come to live in Moss Side in the 1960s.
IntroductionIt is the 1960s and James lives at 37 Cadogen Street, Moss Side, with his mum, dad and two sisters. His parents had been born and brought up on the island of St Kitts in the West Indies and came over to England before James was born. Now his mum, who wants the best for her family, is planning a move to a brand new semi-detached house in Ashton-under-Lyne.
Activities/ Outcomes1. Read Princess Road.
2. Make a list of the differences Veronica found between life in St Kitts and life in England. Which do you think she preferred and why?
3. Find out where exactly St Kitts is and do some research about what life is like there now - jobs, entertainment, sport, etc.
OR
4 . Invite someone who comes from another part of the world or has lived in another part of the world to come in to talk about the country and how the two countries/ communities compare. As 'Forever and ever, Amen' is about a West Indian family, someone who has come from the West Indies would be particularly interesting.
