Worksheet 6: Those mean streets

Aim

To explore through text from 'Forever and Ever Amen' the subject of 'bullying' and 'bullies', how people feel when they are bullied and ways of helping people who are bullied.

Introduction

In the 1960s James Phillips lived in Moss Side, Manchester, and went to Greenheys School.  James had nightmares and often wet his bed.  This caused him no end of problems.

Activities/ Outcomes

1. Read Broadfield Road and Greenheys School 1.

2. Working either individually, in pairs or small groups, complete the worksheet, Those mean streets.  Discuss what students have said.

3. (a) Cut out the nine diamonds on the worksheet, 'Who's a bully' and working in pairs arrange them to make a similar pattern, ranking them in order from the most serious form of bullying at the top to the least serious form of bullying at the bottom.

(b) Two pairs join together and in fours discuss their decisions.  They may rearrange their diamonds if they want to but must have reasons for their decisions.

(c) Discuss findings in a plenary session.

AND/OR

4. Working in groups of four or five and using the different forms of bullying mentioned on the Who's a bully worksheet role play a scene of bullying and suggest a way of dealing with the bully and helping the victim.
