Under 5s

It's never too early to join the library - bring your baby along and see what's available!

  1. A wide range of board books for babies, some with sound and different textures to appeal to the senses.
  2. Picture books for toddlers and pre-school children. Hundreds to choose from - favourite TV characters; books about everyday situations such as going to playgroup or a visit to the doctor; books with songs, nursery rhymes, number, colour; dual language books; books to share at bedtime, anytime!
  3. Stories, rhymes and songs on CD.
  4. Storybags are available in many of our libraries: a fantastic resource to share with your child. Each themed bag contains a book, a toy, a CD and colouring sheet.
  5. Manchester Bookstart  has packs for all children under the age of five, filled with free books and advice for carers about book sharing, reading, play and fun

Things to do

Many libraries have regular weekly (term time only) sessions for babies and young children featuring stories, rhymes and songs. For further details check your local library.

  • Bookstart

    Bookstart aims to provide a free pack of books to every baby in the UK, to inspire, stimulate and create a love of reading that will give children a flying start in life. A further pack is distributed to children aged 3-4 years old.

  • Britannica Online (Student and Junior Editions)

    These two fantastic resources for younger readers are available to library members via this web site (just follow this link and enter your borrower number and PIN when requested). Great for homework! They may also be viewed from a pc in your local library. The full edition of Britannica Online is also available.

  • Stories from the Web

    'Stories from the Web' is a Reader Development Programme. Activities aimed at 1-14 year olds. 'Stories from the Web' aims to promote a love of reading and encourage young people to contribute their creative work which is displayed in the ‘Gallery’ area of the website.
