Residential parking and driveway access

Dropped kerb and H bar marking for a driveway

A dropped kerb allows access across a public footpath or verge to allow a vehicle to gain access to a property from the road.   Approximate standard measurements are gatepost width 3m (9ft 10") and roadside width at dropped kerb  6-7m (19ft 8" to 23ft).

The cost for a standard dropped kerb is £720 plus VAT, you may also need to pay for the cost of the removing any obstructions.

H-bar markings are the white lines that are marked on the road alongside a dropped kerb, to allow vehicle access to a property. The lines highlight to other vehicles that they shouldn't block access to off-road parking areas such as a driveway or garage.  The cost for H bar marking is £252 plus VAT.

It is also possble to apply to extend an existing dropped kerb or H bar marking and a  specific quote for this work will be given.

Once the work has been agreed full payment is required before work commences.

If you are having problems with an unauthorised vehicle parking across the dropped kerb or H bar marking outside your home, you should contact Manchester Parking.  You will need to give them authorisation to ensure they are not enforcing against a vehicle that has your permission to park there.  Once we have your authority we are able to enforce and can issue a penalty charge notice (PCN) and if appropriate, authorise the removal of the vehicle.

What you can do

You can request a dropped kerb and/or H bar marking if you want to gain access to your property to park your car, provided it is safe, physically possible to do so and doesn't have a detrimental affect on street lighting, utility services, street trees and/or other street furniture.

You will be responsible for organising and paying for the construction of a hard standing on your own property and any planning permission that may be required for this.

To submit an application we will need to know:

  • the address where to work is required;
  • letter of consent from your landlord, if you live in rented property;
  • dimensions of the proposed dropped kerb;
  • if there are any obstructions on the pavement which could obstruct the proposed dropped kerb (ie tree/street light/grass verb): and
  • would the dropped kerb be adjacent to a traffic controlled junction.

What we can do

We will assess your application and an officer will meet with you and discuss your requirements on site.

You will receive a free, no-obligation quotation detailing the cost of the work and a timescale for the work to commence.
