Child Performance Licence
Entertainment industry
The licences are issued by the Local Authority where the child lives. Before the Local Authority issue a licence they must be satisfied that the performance(s) will not be detrimental to the child's education or wellbeing.
It is the person who is responsible for the production or event who must apply for a Child Performance Licence. By law, a minimum of 21 days notice is required for issue of these licences. It may not be possible to issue licences for applications made later than 21 days before the child's first performance.
There are different rules for broadcast and non-broadcast performances. A separate licence is needed for each production or set of performances, except in the case of photographic modelling licenses, which last for six months. If time off school is required, consent must be given in advance by the Head Teacher.
All adults chaperoning the child (other than the child's parent or legal guardian) must be registered with the Local Authority in which they reside (see Chaperones).
The child's hours of work and the possible need for medical care are dictated by the regulations. For more information see the National Network for Child Employment and Entertainment (NNCEE) website
