Welcome to the Manchester Joint Health Unit

The Joint Health Unit is a key part of the public health system in Manchester. It is a team that focuses on strategic planning and partnership working for health improvement and tackling health inequalities.  It is based with the Council, but jointly funded by the Council and NHS Manchester.

Download the 2009 Public Health Annual Report: The Importance of the Early Years.  This report has been been jointly produced by the Public Health Team of NHS Manchester and the Joint Health Unit.  This year the focus of the report is early years, because we know that health in childhood has implications for health outcomes in later life.  It sets out the current picture and trends in child health as well as the public health vision for the future.

Download the Adults Health and Well-being Partnership Delivery Plan.  This sets out the programmes of work of the Partnership will deliver over the next two years.  It also provides an overview of partnership structures and strategic context.

Strategic Overview
Manchester has some of the most challenging health problems in the country.  Life expectancy is amongst the lowest in England, and compared with national averages people are more likely to die from cancer, heart disease, respiratory disease and accidents.  Despite the best efforts of the NHS, there is a wide health gap between the city and the country as a whole.  It is recognised that many organisations, not just the NHS, have a vital part to play.  Consequently the Unit was established to co-ordinate the efforts of all agencies to improve health in the city.

The Unit leads on a number of key public health priorities.  It co-ordinates the Adults Health and Well Being Partnership within the Local Strategic Partnership, and manages the allocation of partnership resources.  It supports the work of the Health and Well Being Overview and Scrutiny Committee and also provides a public health information, intelligence and research function to the NHS, the Council and other partner organisations. It also leads on:

  • Smoke Free Manchester - lead and support the work towards a "Smoke Free Manchester"
  • Food Futures - an ambitious and dynamic partnership and strategy with the goal of creating a culture of good food in the city.
  • Valuing Older People - improve the quality of life for older people through the Valuing Older People Initiative
  • Teenage Pregnancy Partnership - co-ordinate the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy to provide better prevention and support for young people.
  • Health & Regeneration - lead on the building of new health facilities in regeneration areas
  • NHS Resources - secure a fair share of NHS resources for the benefit of Manchester residents
  • NHS Jobs - ensure NHS jobs are accessible to local people
  • Alcohol misuse - raise awareness of the harm caused by alcohol misuse through local campaigns
  • Picture of Progress - the latest health statistics for Manchester wards and the city as a whole.
