How to Become a Fairtrade Friendly . . . School

Teaching about Fairtrade fits in well with the modern curriculum. Subjects such as Geography, Religious Studies and Citizenship are all ideal subjects to begin discussing the issues surrounding Fairtrade. School packs including lesson plans are available from the Fairtrade website, http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/(external site)

  • If schools manage two of the following criteria, they will be able to apply for the Fairtrade Friendly, bronze standard
  • If schools manage four of the following criteria they will be able to apply for the silver standard
  • If schools manage six or more of the following criteria they will be able to apply for gold standard

To become Fairtrade Friendly schools can:

  • Have Fairtrade staff "brew groups"
  • Provide Fairtrade juice machines
  • Provide Fairtrade fruit
  • Hold a Fairtrade assembly
  • Incorporate Fairtrade into lesson plans
  • Set up a young co-operative scheme to run a Fairtrade tuck-shop
  • Use Fairtrade tea and coffee exclusively at school meetings
  • Pass a Fairtrade resolution at a school governors meeting
  • Have an occasional Fairtrade stall for school events
