Valuing Older People (VOP)
Free Swimming for 60+
From 1st June 2008 FREE swimming is available for Manchester residents aged 60 and above.
The VOP Programme teamed up with Manchester Primary Care Trust and Manchester Leisure to secure this agreement, giving older people access to pools across Manchester including the flagship Aquatics Centre and Wythenshawe Forum.
Manchester is the first city in England to offer such a package, which forms part of the city's Healthy Ageing Strategy. Dr Sally Bradley, director of public health for Manchester Primary Care Trust says: "Free swimming will give all older people in the city the opportunity to take up this important form of exercise. Swimming helps to reduce high blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease - still the biggest killer in Manchester, tones the body and improves muscle strength, posture and flexibility. It is very important when trying to retain and improve mobility as we get older."
VOP Board Member Tommy Walsh, a keen swimmer, says: "I'm delighted with this decision. Swimming is a great way to start the day. When you get older your legs can be the first things to go but swimming keeps you mobile. There are social benefits, too, because you're going somewhere on a regular basis and meeting like minded people. We're really fortunate in having these facilities; it will encourage people who have swum in the past to get back into it and if you can't swim, well, it's never too late to learn!"
