Airport City

Consultation

The Airport City concept aims to create a new business destination capitalising on the strategic opportunities provided by the Airport's location, connectivity and land assets. This builds on the identification of the Airport as a key economic driver in the Wythenshawe Strategic Regeneration Framework and for the wider Manchester City Region. Land immediately to the north of the Airport is allocated as an Airport City strategic location in the Core Strategy which has recently been subject to consultation. The Core Strategy will be subject to Examination in Public beginning in the Summer.

Initial masterplanning of this strategic site has been led by Manchester Airport. A draft development and infrastructure framework is attached and following agreement at Manchester City Council's Executive is now being published for consultation.

This document is designed to guide and inform the development of the site, your comments are invited by Friday 3rd June 2011. These should be sent to wyth.regeneration@manchester.gov.uk or to Manchester City Council, Alderman Downward House, Wythenshawe Town Centre, Manchester, M22 5RF.

The strategic site is immediately to the north of the Airport and is designed to capitalise on easy access to The Station transport hub at Manchester Airport, making the site one of the most accessible and sustainable locations in the region.

Development of the site will be driven by a number of core strategic objectives which seek to ensure a high quality, sustainable development well placed within the market, they include:

  • Creating a complementary mix of uses;
  • High quality place making to create an attractive and well designed environment;
  • Incorporating excellent access and movement linking to the Airport hub;
  • Integrating principles of sustainability throughout the design, occupation and operation of the development;
  • Supporting local communities, increasing employment opportunities and improving skills.

The site will form a key part of the recently announced Airport City Enterprise Zone. Further work to determine the precise boundaries and the regime that will apply within the Enterprise Zone is being undertaken and will be subject to consultation in due course.
