Benefits and support What is Council Tax Support

Pension-age people and Council Tax Support

If you have reached the age for State Pension Credit you may be able to get Council Tax Support to cover all your bill.

However, we will treat you as working-age and only eligible for help with up to 85% of your bill, if you or your partner get any of these benefits:

  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • income-related Empoyment and Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit
How much Council Tax Support you get also depends on things like your income, who lives with you and how much you have in savings.

You can still get discounts and exemptions (like Single Person Discount if you live alone). We work out Council Tax Support after any discounts have been taken off your bill.

Savings

If you (and your partner) have more than £16,000 in savings or capital you can only get Council Tax Support if you get the Guarantee part of Pension Credit.

Second Adult Rebate

Second Adult Rebate is help with Council Tax for pension-age people whose income is too high to get Council Tax Support; and who have other adults ('second adults') living with them who aren't responsible for paying the Council Tax bill but can't afford to help with it. You may qualify for Second Adult Rebate based on their income.
