Truancy: a parents guide
Taking family holidays during term-time
Parents do not have a right in law to take their children on holiday during school term-time. Only in exceptional circumstances can the school grant leave of absence for a holiday to be authorised.
Taking a child on holiday in term-time interrupts their learning and that of other pupils in the class, as teachers have to constantly repeat work that has been missed.
Parents must make an application to the school at least four weeks before the proposed holiday in order for the school to consider granting its authorisation. If the parent takes a child on holiday without the prior authorisation of the school, the Local Authority may issue a Penalty Notice in respect of the non-attendance at school.
