Student Safety Zones

Police and Manchester City Council have come together with Manchester's three universities to unveil safe zones for students.

What is a Safe Zone?

The zones have been created with the support of businesses around the Oxford Road corridor to provide students with a safe place to wait or visit when they at risk. Students can wait around for the problem to pass, call a taxi to take them home, or get help from the business or the police.

All premises participating in the scheme have a 'Safe Zone' sticker on display in the window.

Who is involved in the scheme?

  • University of Manchester Student Union
  • Manchester Metropolitan University Student Union and Royal Northern College of Music Student Union
  • Greater Manchester Police
  • Manchester City Council
  • Supported by all three universities
  • Local Businesses

Why was the Safe Zone scheme set up?

The scheme was set up to provide the 80 thousand + students studying in Manchester with a safe place to stop if they need to. Some students have been victims of crime and some students are in fear of being a victim of crime, so having a safe haven is really important.

Dr Tim Westlake, Director for the Student Experience, at The University of Manchester, said:
