Our green markets

We’ve had some great successes in making our Christmas Markets greener. The facts speak for themselves too! Just look what we achieved in 2014!

  • 12.5% reduction in waste sent to landfill; and
  • from general waste collected, 41.6 tonnes were recyclable, making the total recovery rate an amazing 51%.

This is all thanks to measures we’ve introduced including:

  • mug and glass deposit scheme - whereby customers are charged a refundable deposit for the use of mugs and glasses;
  • all tableware used on site was bio-degradable;
  • waste/recycling hub located on Princess Street for traders;
  • wooden houses used timber from recycled or well managed sustainable sources and are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified;
  • investment on energy efficient/low voltage lighting which was installed into every wooden chalet;
  • lower fuel consumption: alternative green mains electric supply being used in place of the diesel generators;
  • asking our traders to source produce locally and enforcing this where possible; and
  • promoting group travel via public transport.

Manchester specialist markets are regularly cited as good practice for other event operators and hold an ISO 14001:2004 standard.
